Probably surprising anyone who didn't have "EMF covering Bauhaus" on their 2025 Bingo Card, my "Unbelievable" boys from the Forest of Dean covered "Bela Lugosi's Dead" just in time for Halloween last week. If you haven't checked that out yet, you def need to. Bauhaus/Love And Rockets' David J did and he said this: "A colony of bats burst out from the Forest of Dean to the soundtrack of ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ fed through a contemporary minimalist dystopian filter. The tight rhythmic dub echoes making for a propulsive drive that sees this compact and condensed cover rush past the finishing line in misty Transylvania."
And now, in a one-two punch, they announce their brand new EP REACH FOR SOMETHING HIGHER which comes out next Friday, October 24th!
If you only know EMF for their massive worldwide hit "Unbelievable," then you might have considered them as a one-hit wonder... if you did, man, what a hit that was. But you might have missed their single last year "Hello People" (the video version featured a voiceover by acclaimed actor/comedian/author/massive EMF fan Stephen Fry), but here's your chance to catch up.
Reach For Something Higher, as its title suggests, is an EP that lifts us up from the mire we're currently and offer a bright light of fun, light and that energetic need to move.
A brilliant return to form, this EP features seven tracks (four new songs + three remixes) of EMF's brand of indie pop/indie rave that they were famous for. And while the beat frenzy keeps the adrenaline rushing, the lyrical content keeps the brain active. With potent lyrics embracing protest, love and respect, songs like "Hands in the Air" (dedicated to grassroots organization Led By Donkeys for their "art, activism and courage speaking truth to power"), "LGBTQ+ Lover" which features NYC artpop artists Ecce Shnak ("for our family, friends, fans, and all those who feel increasingly unsafe"), and "The Day the Music Died" (which is dedicated to Greenpeace), the EP moves the body and the mind.
And there's a great cover of Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough" that has been a fan favorite at their live shows (speaking of... U.S. dates coming soon!). EMF have been known for their great covers (remember their cover of Iggy & the Stooges "Search & Destroy"?)... You can add this one to their ouevre.
