This review will be pretty bias. I'm a fan of this band and have had the privileged of following their journey since I first started posting about them a few year ago.
For me, MATTE BLVCK is one of the most exciting new underground music acts in recent history. Those who know me and how much I enjoy being critical of things will be surprised to hear I have none for these guys. No notes.
Where She Wants Revenge offered an elevated modern homage to bands like Bauhaus and Joy Division, MATTE BLVCK offers hints of influences for fans of DEPECHE MODE, Orgy, NINE INCH NAILS, Gary Nnuman, Blaqk Audio, THE PRODIGY, THE CURE, and DEFTONES embedded in a signature style and sound unmistakably their own that has been packing venues and dance floors at goth nights across the world.
It was introductory tracks like "MONUMENTAL" off their debut album "I'm Waving Not Drowning" that perked up my ears for the first time and made me an instant fan, follower, and now supporter (thanks DJ OEDON!).
Around the time of the release of the single "MIDNIGHT & ANGLE" lead vocalist Alex Gonzales asked me what my favorite track was. Obviously you never forget your first, so "MONUMENTAL" was my answer. But in all honesty that isn't exactly true because it is near impossible to really choose any one MATTE BLVCK track over the other. Each subsequent release has been an equal and worthy successor to the last.
Amid tirelessly touring they have been working in the studio meticulously crafting their second full album VOWS which releases for streaming to the masses on Friday September 27th, 2024.
This landmark release features nine tracks including the singles "Midnight & Angle", "Proxy", the title track "VOWS", and the single "BTTR" featuring Ronny Moorings of Clan of Xymox, accompanied by five more epic tracks to make up - what is for me - the best album of the year.
Pre-orders for the digital, CD, and vinyl versions are now available on Bandcamp.
